Today most people who make web pages use WYSIWYG, or "What You See, Is What You Get", web site authoring programs. These range from simple and almost free, to complex professional programs that cost hundreds of dollars and even more. WYSIWYG programs let a person design and lay out web pages without seeing, or needing to understand the HTML language that goes behind every text and layout element.
It should be noted that people who produce professional web sites usually have at least a basic understanding of HTML or HypertText Markup Language. Some prefer to have an in-depth knowledge of HTML, because it helps them make very fine adjustments to page elements that a WSYWIG program may not have built in. For those interested we provide a link below to a web site that describes other HTML related concepts such as CSS, SGML, XML, XHTML, SHTML, CGI, PHP. And JavaScript.
Examples of simple and low cost web authoring programs include Apples new iWeb, and Microsoft’s Front Page (which is being discontinued in 2007). Web authoring programs such as Adobe’s GoLive and Macromedia’s Dream Weaver, are examples of professional WYSWYG tools. Mountain Visions is using the GoLive program. It integrates easily with other Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Image Ready. (links to information about these programs are below)

An example of a fairly simple web site design is this JPAT On-line Web Site Production Workshop you are looking at now. As a starting place where users can find this workshop project we decided a logical place to start a link was in the Education section of the Conservation Network Center.
This On-line Workshop contains 7 different web pages. First there is an “Overview” page and next a "Welcome" page. These all contain links to the topic pages. 1. Basic Photography, 2. Digital Image Processing, 3. Digital Video, 4. 360 º Panoramas, 5. Web Site Production (this page).
A starting point for this discussion is how to create a basic “Home” web page. Considerations for a simple layout and design, interactive navigation, graphic placement and web site structure for all of the pages was made. Other basic elements such as how to make links to other pages or other sites were considered. Look at these pages to see the result of a simple layout, design, navigation and picture placement.
